Stories: they are talking about us!

In an African context, the dynamics of design take on unique significance, especially when considering the daily needs of residents and the infrastructural challenges of production. In this landscape where imported products dominate, young designers in Lagos are grappling with the complexity of executing creative ideas and meaningful ingenious solutions to improve everyday life. In the exhibition “Together Design” curated by the Lagos x Paris program as well as the series of designer interviews below, we explore these notions immersed in the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian culture.

The common thread “together” constitutes the backbone of the designers’ collaborative efforts and underlines their commitment to integrating craftsmanship and know-how.

The staging of the exhibition is structured around 5 proposals for living spaces that invite us to be together. By placing the “whole” at the heart of their practice, designers not only address design challenges in a resource-constrained environment, but also actively contribute to the preservation of socio-cultural heritage and traditional crafts. Through collaboration with artisans, they transcend the boundaries of conventional design paradigms, imbuing their creations with a sense of authenticity and cultural resonance. In doing so, they serve as custodians of centuries-old knowledge and unique craft techniques, ensuring the continued vitality of Nigeria's rich artistic heritage.

Let's explore the many facets of design in Lagos, examining how the symbiotic relationship between designers and artisans fosters innovation, resilience and a deep connection to community and tradition. By highlighting the transformative power of “living together” in design, let’s celebrate the ingenuity of design while advocating for a more inclusive, collaborative and sustainable approach.
